What happens at ISSB
The Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) assesses candidates for commission in the Pakistan Army, Navy and Air Force. Before ISSB, candidates first clear initial tests at a selection centre, which include an intelligence test, an academic test and a medical check.
At ISSB the stay lasts four to five days. Candidates take intelligence tests (verbal and non-verbal), psychological tests such as word association, sentence completion and picture-based story writing, and fill in a detailed biodata form. They then go through group tasks with the Group Testing Officer (discussions, planning exercises, progressive and half group tasks, command task and individual obstacles), interviews with the deputy president and psychologist, and a final conference.
Preparing for the intelligence tests
Intelligence tests reward speed and familiarity. Practise verbal reasoning (series, analogies, coding-decoding, odd-one-out) and non-verbal reasoning (figure series, mirror and water images, embedded figures, pattern completion) with a timer. Explanations help you recognise the common patterns so you can solve new ones quickly.
Beyond the tests
ISSB looks for officer-like qualities: honesty, initiative, cooperation, confidence and clear thinking under pressure. Be yourself, write honestly in psychological tests, take part actively but fairly in group tasks, keep fit for the obstacles, and stay informed about current affairs for discussions and interviews.
