International English Language Testing System. IELTS tests English for study, work and migration. It has four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, scored as bands.

What’s in the IELTS

IELTS test format

IELTS measures English for study, work and migration. There are two versions: Academic (for university admission) and General Training (for work and migration). Both have four parts.

Listening is about 30 minutes with 40 questions. Reading is 60 minutes with 40 questions. Writing is 60 minutes with two tasks — in Academic, describing a chart or diagram and writing an essay; in General Training, a letter and an essay. Speaking is an 11–14 minute interview with an examiner. Each part gets a band from 0 to 9, and the overall band is their average.

How bands are judged

In Writing and Speaking, examiners score task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy. Knowing these criteria tells you what to practise: answering the actual question, organising ideas clearly, using a range of vocabulary and making few grammatical mistakes.

How to prepare

Practise Listening and Reading with real-style question types (form completion, matching headings, true/false/not given) and check why each wrong answer is wrong. Write timed tasks regularly and get feedback. For Speaking, practise answering out loud on common topics and extend your answers with reasons and examples. Grammar and vocabulary MCQs help build accuracy for all four parts.
