CSS exam structure
The Central Superior Services (CSS) competitive examination is conducted by FPSC to recruit officers for groups such as the Pakistan Administrative Service, Police Service, Foreign Service and Inland Revenue.
Since 2022 candidates must first pass the MCQ-based Preliminary Test (MPT), which covers English, general ability (basic mathematics, everyday science, current affairs and Pakistan affairs) and Islamic studies. Only those who pass the MPT can sit the written examination.
The written examination
The written exam has six compulsory papers — English Essay, English (Précis & Composition), General Science & Ability, Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs, and Islamic Studies (or Comparative Study of Major Religions for non-Muslims) — and optional subjects chosen from groups, for a total of 1200 marks. Candidates who pass go on to a psychological assessment and viva voce. Rules on age, attempts and passing marks are set out in FPSC's CSS rules each year.
How to use MCQs for CSS
MCQs are essential for the MPT and are also an efficient way to build the factual base for compulsory papers. Practise Pakistan affairs, current affairs, everyday science and Islamic studies MCQs daily, and use the explanations to turn each fact into notes you can use in essays and answers.
For the written part, MCQ practice is not enough: write at least one essay and one précis each week and get feedback.
