What’s in the FPSC

About FPSC tests

The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) recruits officers for federal government posts, mostly in BS-16 and above. For most posts FPSC first holds an MCQ-based screening test, then a professional or written test for some posts, and finally an interview.

Screening tests commonly have 100 MCQs. A part of the paper tests general ability — English, general knowledge, current affairs, Pakistan affairs, Islamic studies, everyday science and basic mathematics — and the rest tests the subject or professional knowledge needed for the post. The exact split is given in the advertisement for each case.

How to prepare

Start with general ability because it appears in nearly every FPSC paper: Pakistan's history and constitution, geography, important international organisations, recent events, basic science and English grammar and vocabulary.

For the subject part, revise your degree subjects using MCQs grouped by topic and focus on definitions, facts and standard results. Past FPSC papers show the level and style of questions; practise them under a 1-question-per-minute pace.

Common mistakes

Many candidates rely only on old one-liners and ignore the subject part, which carries most of the marks. Others prepare current affairs once and do not update it — keep a running list of recent appointments, agreements, events and statistics.
