GRE General Test format
The GRE General Test from ETS is used for master's and doctoral admissions. Since September 2023 the test is shorter, at just under two hours.
It has one Analytical Writing task (Analyse an Issue, 30 minutes), two Verbal Reasoning sections (27 questions in total) and two Quantitative Reasoning sections (27 questions in total). Verbal and Quant are each scored from 130 to 170, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6. The second section of Verbal and of Quant adapts to your performance in the first.
What is tested
Verbal Reasoning includes reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence, which reward a strong vocabulary and careful reading. Quantitative Reasoning covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis at roughly high-school level, including quantitative comparison questions; an on-screen calculator is provided.
How to prepare
Learn high-frequency GRE words in context, practise reading dense academic passages, and drill quantitative comparison until you can often decide without full calculation. Take official practice tests to learn the pacing, and write timed Issue essays for feedback.
