ECAT paper pattern
ECAT is the Engineering College Admission Test held by the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore for engineering admissions at UET campuses and several other Punjab universities.
The paper has had 100 MCQs for 400 marks: four marks for each correct answer and one mark deducted for each wrong answer. The usual split is Mathematics 30, Physics 30, English 10 and Chemistry 30 (pre-engineering) or Computer Science 30 (ICS students). The test is about 100 minutes long.
How negative marking changes your strategy
Because a wrong answer costs one mark, a blind guess has a negative expected value only if you cannot eliminate anything. If you can rule out two of the four options, guessing between the remaining two is worth it. Never guess wildly on a question you have not read properly.
Practise with the same rule: score your mocks as +4 / −1 so you learn when to skip.
What to study
Mathematics: functions and graphs, limits and differentiation, integration, analytic geometry (lines, circles, conics), vectors, matrices and determinants, sequences and series, permutations, combinations and probability, and trigonometry. Physics: vectors, motion, work and energy, circular motion, waves, optics, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction and modern physics.
Chemistry is mostly concept-based with some numericals on moles, gases, equilibrium and thermochemistry. Computer Science follows the ICS syllabus. English tests grammar and vocabulary.
Preparation tips
Speed in Mathematics wins ECAT. Learn standard results so you do not derive them in the hall, practise with a timer, and use option-checking (put each option back into the question) when it is faster than solving. Do topic-wise MCQs daily, then full papers in the final month.
FAQ
How should I prepare for ECAT?
Practise chapter-wise MCQs daily, then sit full timed mocks. PrepOasis tracks which MCQs you got wrong so you can retry them.
Is there ECAT maths practice?
Yes — practise maths by chapter and subtopic with worked explanations.
